SKETCH AND PROCESS

Material Selection: Working with large panels of pine, alder, ash, and oak, Naomi selects her wood based on its Janka scale hardness and tactile feedback. The result is a medium that commands a physical presence while responding intimately to every carved stroke.

The Carving: Drawing directly onto the surface, Naomi carves the initial layers to establish depth. The work is refined through a deliberate process of building texture, letting chisels and gouges leave their distinct marks in the wood.

The Finish: A stain and seal are applied, providing protection while allowing the natural grain to breathe. The final work is not a mere depiction of nature, but its rhythm captured and paused in wood.

About the Artist..

Born in Mexico, raised in Silicon Valley, and seasoned in Hawaii, Naomi Tovar now lives between Kauai and Carmel, California. She draws deep inspiration from the ocean’s textures and rhythms, translating them into sculpture using gouges and chisels.
